Indiana GOP gubernatorial campaigns privately acknowledge they may soon need a new chairman.
Indiana Republican gubernatorial campaigns are privately grumbling over whether state party Chairman Kyle Hupfer can remain neutral in his post as speculation mounts that he will align with outgoing Secretary of Commerce Brad Chambers' expected campaign for governor.
Such a move could upend Hoosier politics, resulting in a new party chairman ahead of the crucial 2024 election year, and a new establishment-lane, self-funded gubernatorial campaign that would have the benefit of a former chair’s backing.
“The rumors about his involvement with planning and eventually running a Chambers’ candidacy for governor are rampant,” said an Indiana Republican operative aligned with a rival campaign and granted anonymity to speak candidly about internal party dynamics. “If the rumors are true then it’s totally inappropriate for him to remain state party chair and keep using the state party resources to inform the preparations of a Chambers’ campaign.”
